The Hendersonville-Henderson County Unit was formed in Hendersonville at Clifton's Cafeteria on September 4, 1972.  Mr. C.M. King, Director of Hendersonville City Schools was assisted in the organization by NCRSP President Alma Browning, District 1 President Fred Brummitt and State Membership Chairman Josephine Weir.
Twenty-five members were present.  Serving as the first officers for the unit were:  President:  Wade Worley, Sr.; Vice President:  Anna Shipman; Secretary-Treasurer:  Ethan Huggins.

Afternoon meetings were held quarterly and local dues were $2.00.  One of the first items of business was to inform the State Board of Education that the unit was one hundred percent in favor of kindergarten in all North Carolina schools.

The unit continues to have  four bimonthly business meetings,  informative programs and participate in various community projects.  A late summer picnic brings members and friends  together for fellowship and membership information.  The business meetings are held in September, November, January and March.  HCRSP and the Henderson County Public School System jointly sponsor a new retiree banquet in May that is usually held at First Baptist Church

One of the unit’s special projects is the HCRSP Scholarship Fund that was established in 1976 and named in honor of J. M. Foster, a former Henderson County School Superintendent and Trustee of Blue Ridge Community College.  The scholarship assists a student in any area of study at BRCC and the amount varies due to contributions.
